Uploading Photos to Google Drive Chrome Book

This particular characteristic of Chrome Os has likely been around for quite some time. To exist honest, I'm not sure how long users have had access to this option, only I've just not known information technology was possible and I tin can't believe I've not been using it this whole time!

Merely the other solar day I was going to set a profile film for a service of some sort (vague, right? I really don't remember what it was for, though!) and there is a moving-picture show in my Google Photos I tend to go with when I tin can't decide on a new contour photo. When I'm on my Chromebook, my normal workflow for this is to open up upwardly photos.google.com, search for the photo, download it locally, so upload it to the service.

It's not terribly efficient.

If I were on my phone, after all, when I went to peruse my files, Google Photos would show upwardly along with my other stuff and I could simply select the image I want correct and so and there instead of a local file.

Since Chrome OS is now adding Play Files and Linux Files to the files app, I idea just peradventure they would include Google Photos among these add-on locations like to what Android does.

Later searching around for whatsoever sign of this happening in the future, I realized it's been under my nose this whole time.

Where Are They?

Ever since Google Photos offset launched, you could choose to proceed your photos synced with your Google Drive account alongside your Google Photos business relationship. If your Google Photos were uploaded as Loftier Quality (aka – free up to 16MP) and non Total Size, this wouldn't impact your overall Google Drive storage allocation. If they were not uploaded this manner, you were in for a rotten surprise equally all your pics and videos ate away your available Drive space.

I did this for a fleck, but all those older pics and videos were killing my Google Bulldoze space, so I opted out of the whole sync selection pretty early on and never looked back.

As it turns out, the pick to make your Google Photos visible in your Bulldoze made a return at some point (or over again, has been hiding in that location all along) and all you need to do is flip a switch to encounter all your Google Photos right in your Google Bulldoze folders. For Chromebook users, this means all your pics are sitting in a folder chosen – you guessed it – Google Photos and are organized in folders by yr and month.

Who knew? Well, perhaps some of you did already, but I most certainly did not and finding this option isn't exactly intuitive.

A Frequent Employ Example

If you aren't tracking with me on why this is a big deal, let me give you a uncomplicated scenario equally an instance. Many times for an commodity I will grab a snapshot on my Pixel two that I want to utilize as my featured image. Ordinarily, I take the pic, head to photos.google.com, give information technology a few seconds, download the photograph I just took and then re-upload to the site.

You know what would exist much simpler? Taking the pic, then uploading directly from my Files app. That's what I want to do and what I now realize I'g fully able to do. In the upshot you want to practise this as well, allow me show you lot how.

Get Google Photos In The Files App

This honestly couldn't be easier. Commencement, head over to drive.google.com. Make sure y'all are logged into the same Google account you use for your Google Photos. Click the gear up on the right side and select settings. Scroll downwards just a bit and you'll meet Create a Google Photos folder. Hit that checkbox, wait just a little bit, and you'll have a dedicated Google Photos app right in your Google Drive sorted by year, month, and date.

What that also means is Chromebook users will see the aforementioned binder correct at that place in the Files app next time you lot need to upload or share a photograph you recently took on your telephone (assuming you are using Google Photos on your phone too). Keep in heed, this is a two-way street. Delete pics from these files, they will exist deleted from Google Photos. Google did safeguard this in one mode, however, and full binder deletions will not result in any deletions in Google Photos to salvage you from that sort of gut-wrencing misery.

The whole affair works so well, as well! The image below of my Cubs cup was taken on my Pixel 2 and in the time it took me to place an image in this post (near 30 seconds), it was already synced up and ready for me to upload directly from my Files app.

This is the workflow I've been subsequently forever, and I'm so happy to share information technology with anyone who's been in search of this uncomplicated, effective, and brilliant use Google Photos on a Chromebook.
